Winemaker's comments:
Vibrant straw with golden hues. Rich, ripe intense aromas of stonefruits, apricots and citrus. Roasted cashew, nougat and subtle butterscotch complexities underlay the fruit driven nose. Soft, fleshy fruit flavours of citrus, white peach and spicey oak fill the palate. Partial barrel fermentation provides softness, texture and richness. Great persistence of rich flavours balanced by fine and soft acid. Cellaring up to 3 years.
Background Information:
With each vintage, the best varietal fruit is selected from the premium grape growing regions of Western Australia to produce the best varietal Moondah Brook wines, showing excellent quality.
What's the Difference?:
2002 was an exceptionally low yielding year for Chardonnay in the South West of Western Australia. The season enjoyed ideal ripening conditions, providing fruit of exceptional flavour intensity and balance. Selected from vines up to 30 years of age, the grapes were fermented in a combination of stainless steel tanks and oak barrels. 25% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation to provide rich creaminess. Following fermentation, maturation for 8 months in 1-2 year old and new French oak barrels prior to bottling in late September, provided further flavour development and complexity.
